The role of any person working in a school within a support role, is vital to not only education but also to child care. Unlike many other jobs, the work is neither boring nor predictable. In addition, the work is highly rewarding, and support workers can rest assured that their contribution to education is highly valued.
The actual job role involves helping teachers to teach, and pupils to learn, whilst working alongside the classroom teacher. Its good to know that every support worker role is different, as every schools is different, however some duties would include:
- supporting pupils on an individual basis
- supporting pupils in small groups
- setting up classroom resources
- listening to pupils read
- supporting pupils with specific literacy and numeracy tasks
- providing a safe and comfortable environment to maximise learning potential
- assisting in promoting independence
- with the pupils, celebrating diversity
There are many different recognised qualifications available to support your role, whilst this is not a pre-requisite, classroom based experience is.
